The holidays have a way of making you see your home through fresh eyes. Suddenly you notice the scuff by the front door, the faded wall in the living room, and that spot in the hallway that’s been bugging you for a year.
So what’s the move? A few quick touch-ups, or a full repaint? Here’s how to tell.
When a Touch-Up Works
Touch-ups are great for small, isolated spots. They’re quick and keep things looking fresh between bigger projects.
A touch-up is usually enough if:
- The damage is small, like a scuff, nail hole, or minor chip
- The paint is less than a few years old
- You still have the original paint (or know the exact color and finish)
- The wall gets little direct sunlight
If all of that checks out, a little patching and paint can go a long way.
When a Full Repaint Looks Better
Here’s the tricky part. Touch-ups don’t always blend in the way you’d expect. Paint changes over time, so fresh paint on an older wall can stand out more than the original mark did.
It’s probably time for a full repaint if:
- The color has faded. Sunlight slowly shifts paint color, especially in rooms with big windows. New paint won’t match the faded wall, even if it’s the same exact shade.
- You see shiny or dull patches. Touch-ups can create spots where the sheen looks different from the rest of the wall. This shows up most in eggshell, satin, and semi-gloss finishes and is easy to spot when light hits the wall at an angle.
- There’s damage in multiple spots. If you’re patching five or six places on one wall, repainting the whole surface will look cleaner and more even.
- It’s been 5+ years. Most interior paint starts showing its age around this point, especially in high-traffic areas like hallways, entryways, and kids’ rooms.
- You’re just tired of the color. That counts too! If a room feels dated, a new color can make it feel like a different space.
Getting Ready for the Holidays
Interior painting is a great project for this time of year. Our team works with low-VOC paint options, so there’s less odor and your home stays comfortable while we work. Most rooms can be done in a day or two, which means plenty of time before guests arrive.
Not sure which way to go? We’re happy to take a look and give you an honest recommendation. Sometimes a few touch-ups really are all you need.
