Paint finish, or sheen, refers to how much shine the paint will have once it dries, and is a measure of how much light reflects off a paint’s surface. It’s important to understand the different types of sheen because not all sheens are the same. There are many types you can use to enhance the appearance and dimension of a room.
Starting from the top, the paint with the most sheen is high gloss paint. High gloss paints work best in areas with high traffic because of their durability. Less shiny, semi-gloss paints are also a great option because they are so versatile. They are not as absorbent and porous compared to those with less sheen. Also, cleaning will be easier since the paint won’t absorb as much dirt and grime from any outside factors. If you plan to clean a surface with high or semi-gloss, soap and water will work just fine. These paints are a great option for your windows, doors, trim, and woodwork. They also help brighten a room because light from windows and lamps will bounce off semi-gloss paint more easily than with a flatter finish, like eggshell or matte.
Moving away from shiny surfaces, paints with less sheen are more porous and delicate. Eggshells have no reflection and are great for areas like bathrooms, kitchens, and closets. Flat or matte paints have the least shine because they absorb light more than reflect it, giving off a subtle, classy vibe in the room. We use a washable finish on walls and ceilings, but not in bathrooms or kitchens because of high traffic in those areas. Keep in mind, don’t use any abrasive materials when cleaning these types of surfaces since you don’t want to damage the paint. If you decide to go with a darker, richer color, know darker colors tend to have a higher sheen. If you don’t want a super shiny effect, step down at least one level on the sheen scale. Also, the higher the sheen, the more easily you will see defects.
